![]() These tax provisions are similar to federal spending in that they provide benefits from the federal government to employers, individuals, and other entities. In addition to federal spending on health programs and services, the federal government provides several tax benefits that support health-related activities, known as tax expenditures. ACA premium tax credits-which include a refundable portion that counts as outlays and a non-refundable portion that counts as lost revenue-represent a much smaller portion (5% of mandatory outlays). Medicare alone, which covers 65 million older adults and younger people with long-term disabilities, accounts for half of mandatory spending on federal health programs and services, while Medicaid, which covers 84 million individuals, accounts for another 37% (Figure 2). Mandatory health spending includes nearly all Medicare spending, federal spending on Medicaid and CHIP (which are jointly funded by states and the federal government), and the refundable portion of the health insurance premium tax credit for coverage through the ACA Marketplaces, along with other mandatory health spending, which is detailed in Table 1. Mandatory spending is not subject to annual appropriations votes by Congress but instead mandated by existing laws. Mandatory spending comprises the majority (88% or $1.6 trillion) of federal spending on health programs and services. By comparison, Social Security accounted for 21% of federal outlays in FY 2023, while defense accounted for 13%. Specifically, Medicare accounted for 13% of the total, Medicaid and CHIP accounted for 10%, other domestic health spending accounted for 4%, hospital and medical care for veterans was 2%, and global health was 0.1%. Federal spending on domestic and global health programs and services accounted for 29% of net federal outlays in fiscal year (FY) 2023 (taking into account offsetting receipts), or $1.9 trillion out of $6.4 trillion (Figure 1). These FAQs answer basic questions about health spending and the federal budget and budget enforcement tools, including the debt limit and sequestration. This leaves open the question of whether Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) premium tax credits, and possibly other health programs and services could be targeted for spending reductions in the near future. House Speaker McCarthy has agreed that cuts to Social Security and Medicare are “off the table” in these discussions but has not ruled out seeking other spending cuts. The Biden Administration has said it will not negotiate spending reductions as part of debt limit talks but is open to separate discussions about approaches to debt and deficit reduction. In current discussions around the debt limit, some Republican lawmakers have pushed for reductions in future federal spending as part of a deal to raise the debt limit. Congress has passed legislation 20 times since 2001 to increase or suspend the debt limit to avoid the federal government defaulting on its obligations. The amount of the debt limit is established by law and increasing or suspending it requires legislative action. It is important to know the company that is promising to pay you if your car breaks down. What is the most important thing I should know about an extended service agreement? ![]() ![]() Final ThoughtsĪlthough the amount of coffee you can make with a 12-ounce bag depends on many factors, if you use a drip machine or French press like most Americans, you can bet on getting about 16 twelve-ounce cups of coffee from a standard 12-ounce bag. Luckily, however, espresso is so strong that you can heavily water it down, and it still tastes great. This means that the density of the substance needs to be factored into the conversion. When converting between cups and dry ounces (oz) it's important to remember that the cup is a unit of volume and the dry ounce (oz) is a unit of weight. One US cup of chocolate chips converts to 6 oz. These 42 ounces are equal to just over five standard cups. One US cup of un-sifted powdered sugar converts to 4.2 oz. If we assume that eight grams of coffee make a one-ounce shot of espresso, an entire bag of coffee will make about 42 shots of espresso. Because espresso uses a very small volume of water relative to the number of beans it uses, the quantity of coffee you can produce per 12-ounce bag is significantly less. This is because alternative brewing methods have different optimal water-to-coffee ratios, and the grind of various brewing methods will be different.įrench press, for example, utilizes a medium-coarse grind, whereas automatic drip, Aeropress, cold brew, and every other method has a unique coarseness that’s optimal to get the best flavor. Different brewing methods impact the amount of coffee your 12-ounce bag will make. So, we can make about 16 cups of coffee per 12-ounce bag. Take a sip of your coffee and see if you can do that calculation in your head. Therefore, our very last calculation is to divide 32.4 by 2. The “cup” as a unit of volume is actually half the size of what we traditionally think of as a standard coffee cup size (that is, a 12-ounce mug). ![]() Now, you may be saying, “Wow, that’s a lot!” You’re right, but there’s one thing we need to remember. Now all that’s left is to calculate the number of cups. In fact, the 42 oz to cup relationship is of type m:n, m 5 and n 3. Ten grams of ground coffee is the equivalent of 0.37 ounces. In any case, we’re left with the question, “how much do two tablespoons of coffee weigh?” Of course, this depends on the grind’s coarseness, but generally speaking, two tablespoons of coffee weigh about 10 grams. If you have a different way to measure, no worries - check out our calculator here. This ratio is perfect for pour-over coffee makers, automatic drips, and French presses. We’ll begin with the oft-repeated statement in the world of coffee drinking: “2 tablespoons per cup, you’re in luck.” Okay, not everyone says that, but they definitely use two tablespoons of ground coffee per cup. ![]() Then, we weigh those coffee beans, divide 12 ounces by that number, and see in real-time how many cups of coffee a 12-ounce bag makes. Our primary coffee ratio is 1 cup of coffee to x amount of coffee beans. In the first place, though, let’s define how we’re going to make this calculation. ![]() Luckily we have the internet and a calculator on our phones, so we don’t even have to do much work here to figure this out.
